Once the implant has been planned and the guide fabricated, we will place the implant. Often, this is done using local anesthesia, numbing medicine that allows us to operate without causing pain, similar to when you have a dental filling. However, some patients prefer some sedation through an IV given the complexity of the procedure or simply due to their personal preference. At the end of the procedure, if the implant is firm enough in the bone we can place a healing abutment which is just visible above the gum tissue. Tif the implant is not initial stable enough we will place a cover screw. A cover screw will allow the implant to be fully covered by the gum tissue and protected during the healing process. If a cover screw is placed, you will require an additional minor procedure to uncover the implant after 3 months integration period. If a healing abutment is placed you will skip this uncovering step.
After three months, if the implant was covered with gum tissue at the time of initial placement tit will need to be uncovered. This is a minor procedure to access the buried implant. If a healing abutment was placed, this step is not needed.
Once the implant is fully integrated and a healing abutment has been placed either at the time of initial implant placement or during the uncovering procedure, we will confirm integration of then implant with a torque test. Implants are ~97% successful, which is good but its not 100%. ~ 3% of implants will have difficulty with integration and may fail to demonstrate integration at this time. If that is the case, we may give the implant additional time to integrate, or it may need to be replaced.
Once integration is confirmed with a torque test, we will provide detailed information to your restoring dentist who you will see next to take an impression and begin fabrication of the crown, the part of your implant that will act as the replacement tooth.
Once your crown has been fabricated, your restoring dentist will mount it on the implant and you will have your tooth back!
